How to check your AirPods model

1. Check in your iPhone's Bluetooth settings (easiest)

Connect your AirPods, then on your iPhone or iPad open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ next to your AirPods, and look for Model Number. On iOS 14 and later, the model name (such as “AirPods Pro”) also appears at the top of that same screen. Your serial number is listed on this screen too.

2. Look on the AirPods themselves

The model number is printed on the underside of each earbud, starting with the letter A — for example, “A2564.” On AirPods Max it is printed behind the cushion on the left ear cup. Match that A number in the lookup table below.

3. Use the serial number

If the printed text has worn off and you cannot connect the AirPods to a phone, the serial number will still identify them. See where to find your AirPods serial number below.

Where to find your AirPods serial number

The serial number and the model number are two different things, and they live in different places. The model number tells you the generation. The serial number identifies your specific unit, which is what Apple needs for warranty, coverage and authenticity checks.

There are four places to find it:

On the charging case

Open the lid and look at the underside of it. On every AirPods charging case, from the original Lightning Charging Case through to the MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods Pro 3, the serial number is printed on the underside of the lid in small grey text. This is the serial number, not the model number, which is a common mix up.

On your iPhone

Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ next to your AirPods, and scroll to Serial Number. This is the easiest method if your AirPods still pair. It also works from Settings > General > About on older iOS versions.

On AirPods Max

Lift off the left ear cushion. The serial number is printed on the ear cup underneath, alongside the model number.

On the original packaging

The serial number appears on the barcode label on the bottom of the retail box, and on the receipt if you bought from Apple. This is the only method that works if you no longer have the AirPods in hand.

Which AirPods model do I have?

Match the model number from the earbud or your Bluetooth settings to the generation below, then jump straight to cases cut for that model:

AirPods 1 and 2 share the same Lightning case (A1602) and look identical — the giveaway is that AirPods 2 supports “Hey Siri” and an optional Wireless Charging Case (A1938). AirPods 4 comes in a standard and an ANC version with different cases (A3058 vs A3059) that are not interchangeable. AirPods Max has no separate charging case, so it has no case model number. Model numbers can vary by region; confirm yours with Apple if you're unsure.

Numbers not on this list: some AirPods carry a model number that Apple does not publish in its own identification list, such as A2803 and A2804, which turn up on AirPods Pro units sold in certain regions or supplied as service replacements. Apple has not confirmed a generation for these, so check yours on Apple's coverage checker rather than assuming. You may also see shorter codes printed on the hardware, such as 6F21, 8B41 or an EMC number. Those are manufacturing and regulatory codes, not model numbers, and they will not identify your generation.
